Calligraphy with Flourishing and Creating Shadows
What is Flourishing?
One of the key elements of calligraphy is flourishing, which is adding decorative details around the letters and words. It involves the use of loops, curls, and other elements to accentuate the shapes of the letters and create a sense of movement and fluidity. Flourishing adds an extra layer of elegance and sophistication to the overall composition, enhancing the beauty of the written script.
There are many different styles of flourishing, ranging from simple and understated to elaborate and intricate. Some calligraphers prefer to keep their flourishing minimal, adding subtle stems to the beginning and using loops to accentuate the letterforms without overwhelming them. Others may like a more extravagant approach, incorporating elaborate swirls and flourishes that fill the page with intricate detail.
Regardless of the style chosen, flourishing is an essential aspect of calligraphy that allows the calligrapher to showcase their skill and creativity, adding a personal touch to each piece that reflects their unique artistic vision.
How To Flourish
Flourishing is a thoughtful and deliberate process that requires skill and precision from repetition but can elevate your piece from ordinary to extraordinary. Practice basic shapes associated with creating loops and curls until your hands naturally fall into the motion, building that muscle memory essential for all parts of calligraphy. Try copying the lines and loops in the picture below on your own piece of paper or print the image and trace the lines. With adequate practice, flourishing will become second nature. The fluidity of the brush pen and the lines will only make you want to flourish more!
Creating Shadows and Highlights
The application of shadows and highlights create the illusion of a 3D shape, giving the letters more definition and contributing to a lettering appearance that pops out amongst other words. If a certain word or phrase is the focus of the work, creating shadows or adding flourishes can accentuate the segment, distinguishing it from the rest of the piece that serves to decorate.
How to Create Shadows that Look Natural?
1. Always shadow to the right of each line.
2. If the line is horizontal, shadow below the line.
3. If the letter is curvy and the segment is concave up like a smile, shadow above.
4. If the letter is curvy and the segment is concave down like a frown, shadow below.
How to Create Highlights that Look Natural?
Using a lighter color than the letter and shadow, draw a line following the shape of the segment on the OPPOSITE side of the shadow. This makes sense because when light shines on an object, the bright spot is on top while the shadow is behind and the object.
