What is Faux Calligraphy?

Faux calligraphy, also known as fake calligraphy, is a popular method of achieving the look of calligraphy without using the traditional calligraphy tool that can be hard to control for beginners. This technique is perfect for those who want to try calligraphy but may not have the right tools or don’t feel confident in their ability to use them. Coloring in the spaces is extremely satisfying.

Whatever you need it for, faux calligraphy is a great alternative if you are struggling or just learning the principles of calligraphy. With all that being said, let’s jump right into it!

Materials

Any writing utensil works for faux calligraphy whether it’s pens, markers, or even pencils. Grab something to write with and a piece of paper to get started.

Steps to Faux Calligraphy

Step 1: write out your desired word or phase in cursive

Step 2: go back and add thickness to every downstroke of each letter by drawing a second line next to the original line

Step 3: fill the space in between the two to create a thicker line

Look at the picture below to see demonstration:

Top line shows Step 1 in creating faux calligraphy where you simply write the words in cursive. Middle line shows the thickening of the downstrokes that create the effect of calligraphy.
